It usually doesn't happen when you split the household via Manage Households. I've found that this usually happens when you move a sim via the move out and split household options on the phone or computer. If you can't then, you should be able to sell it in build mode. Sometimes, even though your sim can't pick the item up since it's not owned, you can drag it into the sim's inventory.
